How Changes in Space Transform Everyday Life: the Rise of Shelter Project in Dnipro
In Dnipro, there is a place where people learn how to move forward after being forced to relocate. The “Dzherelo Pidtrymky” shelter has been hosting internally displaced persons for nearly four years and, for many, has become a temporary home.
With the financial support of Hungarian Interchurch Aid, we implemented the Rise of Shelter project to make this space more comfortable for everyday living.
Today, the shelter is home to approximately 150–170 people (55 families). These include children, teenagers, adults, and elderly people, families with children, and persons with disabilities. When so many people live in one shared space, everyday life challenges become especially noticeable.
Over time, the kitchen areas could no longer handle the demand: queues began to form, cooking became more complicated, and the constant waiting increased fatigue. At the same time, worn-out flooring affected cleanliness and safety, while the lack of wardrobes in the rooms made even basic things—like storing personal belongings and maintaining order—more difficult.
Within the project, we focused on these simple yet essential needs.
Two kitchen areas were equipped with new furniture, tables, chairs, and refrigerators. This helped reduce overcrowding and waiting times, allowing residents to use the kitchens more calmly and conveniently.
We also replaced the flooring, making the space safer and more hygienic. In addition, eight wardrobes were installed in the rooms, giving residents more personal storage space and a greater sense of order.
The impact of these changes was immediate. Daily life became more organized, kitchens more accessible, and the overall environment more comfortable for everyday living.
During the project implementation, we conducted a needs assessment, organized transparent procurement, ensured the quality of the equipment, and made sure that residents could safely use the newly arranged spaces. This ensures that the improvements will remain effective not only now, but in the long term as well.
Because, in reality, projects like this are not only about repairs or furniture. They are about restoring a sense of normal life—even in temporary conditions.
